Sailor Trousers with Front Flap and Buttons
Originating between the 18th and 19th centuries as part of naval uniforms, sailor trousers were designed for practicality and ease of movement—even within the cramped quarters aboard ships. Their most distinctive feature is the wide front flap, fastened with two visible rows of buttons, combined with a high waist and wide-leg silhouette. The flap closure was especially functional in emergencies, allowing sailors to quickly remove their trousers—for instance, if they fell overboard or during a fire.
Today, this iconic garment has made a strong comeback in navy-inspired fashion, celebrated for its vintage charm and timeless versatility.
The Pier model by Lucarda draws inspiration from vintage pieces preserved in our store, as well as the trousers we once produced for sailors working for shipping companies who sourced their uniforms from us. It features distinctive red stitching and is crafted from untreated denim.
